Solid, waxy substance produced in the sperm whale intestines. Fresh ambergris is black, soft, and has unpleasant smell, while exposing to sun causes it to harden, become light grey or yellow, and get pleasant smell it is recognised for. In sperm whales, it is assumed to protect intestines from irritation caused by undigestible objects like squid beak or cuttlebone.
