De sluker i seg over 1,8 millioner tonn <a class=\"popup\" href=\"#elementor-action%3Aaction%3Dpopup%3Aopen%26settings%3DeyJpZCI6IjQ2NyIsInRvZ2dsZSI6ZmFsc2V9\">byttedyr<\/a> hvert \u00e5r, blant annet kommersielt viktige fiskeslag som sild, torsk og hyse. Bare i islandske farvann spiser de rundt 1 million tonn fisk i \u00e5ret. Studier tyder p\u00e5 at disse beitevanene kan p\u00e5virke fangstene i det kommersielle fisket, men den n\u00f8yaktige virkningen er fortsatt uavklart. Countershading is a type of camouflage where an animal's dark back blends with the ocean floor or surface when viewed from above, while its lighter belly blends with the brighter water surface when viewed from below. This helps prey not to be seen by their predators but also helps predators to approach their prey unnoticed. A very prominent example for a counter shaded species is the killer whale (<i>Orcinus orca<\/i>). The dwarf minke whale (DMW) takes this counter shaded colouration to the next level. They have dark grey parts on their back, white marks on their belly, and grey patches and streaks on their sides. Each of these parts has a fixed position and colour but can look different depending on how the pigment is distributed (Hutchings et al., 2023). This means that even though DMWs have a general colour pattern, each whale has a unique profile, just like how each giraffe has unique spots or each human has unique fingerprints. The coloration of DMWs is also consistently highly asymmetrical, with the markings on the right side of their body being more dominant than those on the left. Whales stimulate primary production and carbon uptake by releasing nutrient-rich faeces into the surface waters.<\/p><p>In a new study by Carla Freitas and colleagues, including Scientific Committee member Martin Biuw, concentrations of macro- and micronutrients were analysed from 31 minke whales off Svalbard, Norway (15,000 population size). Samples were taken from whales onboard commercial whaling vessels, enabling Freitas et al. (2023) to analyse the actual nutrient concentration in faeces before their release and dissolution in the water. <\/p><p>They found that each whale poops on average 43 kg daily. This translates to 7 t of nitrogen and 10 t of phosphorus daily during summer for the whole population.
