Solid, waxy substance produced in sperm whale intestines. Fresh ambergris is black, soft, and has an unpleasant smell, while exposure to sun causes it to harden, become light grey or yellow, and get the pleasant smell it is recognised for. In sperm whales, it is assumed to protect their intestines from irritation caused by undigestible objects like squid beaks or cuttlebone.
