“The natural process by which a living species becomes the best fitted for its environment. Adaptations are a result of natural selection’s acting upon heritable variation over several generations” (Gittleman, 2022). Organisms adapt in many different ways, their body structure, their physiology, the way they move through their environment, and even on a genetic and molecular level. For instance, the blowhole at the top of a dolphin’s head is an adaptation that allows it to keep swimming without slowing down to breathe by sticking its entire face out of the water.
